ASA Bans Online Gambling Advertisements

A gambling advertisement that claimed online betting would improve sexual prowess and self esteem has become one of the first campaigns to be banned under tough new laws, following criticism from the advertising watchdog. The national press campaign for online casino Paddy Power was irresponsible in linking gambling to “seduction, sexual success and enhanced attractiveness,” the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled. The advert, published in the Times, featured a dwarf in a limousine flanked by two beautiful women, smoking a cigar and holding up a champagne glass.

France Considering Legalising Online Gambling

The French government said Thursday it is considering legalizing online gambling. Prime Minister Francois Fillon's office said it is studying a report it commissioned last November into how the online gambling market might be opened up in France.

Currently, all internet-based games involving money are outlawed in France, except for the French lottery monopoly Francaise des Jeux and pari-mutuel (or pool betting) horse betting monopoly PMU, which offer online betting and scratchcards. Within the last year, some heads of foreign online gambling operators have been arrested in France for breach of French gambling laws.

Dutch Senate Votes Against Online Gambling Bill

The upper house of the Dutch parliament defeated a bill that would have allowed monopoly casino operator Holland Casino to open a gambling Web site on a trial basis.

The bill was defeated in a narrow 35-37 vote on Tuesday, the Senate's Web site said. The lower house of the Dutch parliament had approved the bill in 2006. PartyGaming, Bwin and Sportingbet could have suffered if the plans had been approved as Dutch gamblers would have been able to bet legally with Holland Casino as opposed to going to the other firms' Web sites based elsewhere.

William Hill Gaming Machines Help Online Troubles

Bookmaker William Hill posted full-year profits in line with analysts expectations on Wednesday as high-stake gaming machines in its shops helped combat a near 20% drop in Internet profits.

The London-based bookmaker said soccer results had broadly evened themselves over the year although cancellations due to last summer's floods, hit horse-race betting. A 15% rise in profits from its 8,400 highly profitable Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) drove a 9% increase in gross win (gain on customers betting) in its betting shops.

UK Tory Purchases 15% Stake in Online Gaming Company
