Tournament: World Series of Poker update

Posted by admin

Poker pro Brandon Cantu won the US$1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or better event to earn the second bracelet of his young career. He topped veteran pro Lee Watkinson heads-up and took home the top prize of US$228,867. Cantu won his first bracelet in the 2006 US$1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event, his first career WSOP cash. Veteran player Phil “Poker Brat Hellmuth” also cashed in the Omaha 8 tourney to extend his record of WSOP cashes to 73.

The final table is set for the US$50,000 buy-in World Championship H.O.R.S.E. event. WSOP money leader Vitaly Lunkin looks to take down his second big-money buy-in event after winning the US$40,000 40th anniversary event earlier this month. Finnish pro Ville Wahlbeck also looks to get back into the Player of the Year race with a win in this event. Other notable pros at this final table include Erik Seidel, Chau Giang and former Main Event champion Huck Seed.

In one surprising bit of news, Jeffrey Lisandro is actually not in contention for another Seven Card Stud bracelet. American Chad Brown has made the final two tables at the US$1,500 buy-in Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better event. Brown has twenty-six WSOP cashes in his career but has yet to win a bracelet. His best finishes in Seven Card Stud events have been two second-place finishes. Other players at the final two tables include veteran pro Vince Burgio and former tournament director Matt Savage.

The US$10,000 buy-in World Championship No-Limit Hold’em Main Event starts Friday, July 3. Day 1 play will run from July 3 to July 6, then Day 2 play will continue on July 7 and 8. The entire field will come together July 10 and play down to the final table July 15. The “November Nine” will come back to play the final table on November 7 and the champion will be crowned on November 10.

Carsten Joh bests thousands to win WSOP event 51

Posted by admin

Event 51 – the $1,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em competition at the World Series of Poker has ended in victory for German poker pro Carsten Joh, who bested a packed entry field of 2,781 to win the lion’s share of the massive $3,796,065 prize pool after three days of tough but exciting poker.

Capping a final day that lasted for 13 hours, Joh faced Andrew Chen in the heads up, defeating his last opponent after an hour of heads up action to claim the bracelet – his first – and the main prize of $664,426.

From the massive entry field, only 30 players remained at the start of Day 3, and these were quickly whittled down to a final table that comprised Jason Helder with a chip lead of 2.9 million, pursued by Steven Levy (2,515,000), Thibaut Durand (1,420,000), Georgios Kapalas (1,280,000), Owen Crowe and Andrew Chen, both on 1,030,000, Carsten Joh (875,000), Nathan Page (735,000) and David Walasinski (700,000)

Despite his massive starting advantage, Helder went out after only two hours of play and in the eighth position after losing over half of his chips to Chen on the bad side of an all-in preflop clash. Joh, on the other hand, steadily built his stack with patient but skilled play, making his main moves only when the contest was down to three players.

When David Walanski went out in third position, earning $272,405, he gave Joh a small chip advantage going into the heads up against Chen, and he quickly built that into a 5 to 1 lead, taking the game after an hour of action.

Chen had to settle for second place, with a $412,632 payday.

NASCAR: Lenox Industrial Tools 301

Posted by admin

While NASCAR fans may not be big on flat track racing, bettors can profit as the best drivers and cars often end up at the front.

Luck and strategy don’t play as important of a role, making it the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the available matchup and prop wagering options This makes picking your Sunday bets a little easier heading into this weekend’s race New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

With that in mind, Jimmie Johnson, a well-known flat track ace, is the official favorite at a 6-1 price. Still, he has proven to be much better at Phoenix, a track similar to this one.

In fact, it is Denny Hamlin, at 7-1, who has the richest recent history at NHMS, with a win and five Top 10′s in six starts since ’06.

Other successful ’09 drivers who have fared well at New Hampshire have been Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Kurt Busch. Gordon (8-1) has been quietly unassuming the past couple of months yet remains in second place in the standings. He has three career wins at this facility, along with an average finish of 11.6 in 28 starts and has led 1141 laps.

Stewart (also 8-1), the series leader, has already stacked up four second-place finishes this season to go along with his one victory. Stewart is running up front each week, no matter what the venue. He has finished in the Top 5 in half of his 20 career starts in Loudon.

Busch (10-1) is fourth in the standings, and the defending champ of this race. He has three career NHMS wins.

Greg Biffle is another driver to consider as well, and at 10-1, is the most recent winner at this track, opening up the ’08 Chase by taking home the checkered flag. One other driver to keep in mind as an underdog is Mark Martin, at 15-1, as he dominated the race at Phoenix in April.

Three Childress Racing drivers will be among the guys that some experts will talk about as contenders, since they boast strong stats at New Hampshire, but none of them is enjoying a very good season in ’09.

In other words, take the following numbers with a grain of salt. Jeff Burton leads the active drivers in wins here with four. Kevin Harvick leads the series in laps led over the last six years with 245. Just behind him in that category is Clint Bowyer, with 240.

The highest ranked driver of those three in the current standings: Burton in 15th. Still, you have to like their chances better than the following group of drivers that have struggled in Loudon, and at flat tracks in general.

David Ragan has a career average finish of 25.5, David Reutimann 24.5, Jamie McMurray 23.6, and Juan Montoya 22.8. Of the four, only McMurray has scored a Top 10 previously, with three in 12 career starts.

Canadian lottery launches responsible gambling program

Posted by admin

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation in Vancouver, Canada has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting responsiblke gambling, branded “Game Sense”. The program will include extensive use of media and public service television advertisements.

“These ads represent the first ever responsible gambling TV messages in B.C.,” BCLC president Michael Graydon said at a news conference.

GameSense will also promote provincially funded resources such as the problem gambling line and free counselling services available. The initiative is supported by the Responsible Gambling Council, a non-profit organization specialising in prevention strategies since 1983.

Last year the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. in Toronto launched a two-year pilot project in Windsor and Niagara Falls casinos to establish on-site Responsible Gaming Resources Centres, operated by the Responsible Gambling Council.

Since then the program has expanded to 27 gaming locations across Ontario. About $100 million a year is spent in Canada on responsible gaming awareness, education, treatment and research.

Graydon said 4.6% of the adult population in B.C. are problem gamblers and 8.7% are at risk players.

He said Game Sense kiosks and staffed booths will be at each of the 15 land casinos in B.C. and another 16 “community gaming centres,” which include bingo halls.

The BCLC makes $2.6 billion from gaming in B.C. and another $1.1 billion is allocated to the province’s charities.

Computers at Game Sense kiosks will provide gamblers with information about the odds of winning and how games are played.

The initiative has its own website at GameSense.ca.

Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto? November Fight Possible

Posted by admin

A number of fighters names have been thrown out there as possible opponents of Philippines boxing sensation Manny Pacquaio, but it appears now that his camp is currently in negotiations with Miguel Cotto’s people.

According to the LA Times, promoter Bob Arum is negotiating terms, including weight — probably below welterweight — and purse split. Meanwhile, Shane Mosley says he’s the man Pacquiao should be fighting.

Both Pacquiao and Cotto say they would like to fight one another next.

The fight is tentatively scheduled for November 14 in Las Vegas.

It is widely believed that once the fight is officially scheduled, SBG Global plans to offer a line on this bout.

"It is widely expected this would be the most bet on boxing event of the year should it come to fruition in 2009," expressed Tyrone Darnell Black of Gambling911.com.  "SBG has advised us that Pacquiao will be instilled a big favorite."

MGM Mirage Not Selling Las Vegas Casinos Due to Low Offers

Posted by admin

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — As reported by Bloomberg: "MGM Mirage Chief Executive Officer Jim Murren doesn’t plan to sell any casinos on the Las Vegas Strip because of low offers.

"’As it relates
New Volcano at the Mirage in Las Vegas  to Strip properties we haven’t engaged in any discussions on those,’ Murren said yesterday in a telephone interview. ‘We don’t feel like we could come close to what we believe the values are worth. The multiples are low, it seems like the wrong time.’

"The company, the largest operator of casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, will probably decide ‘within the next month’ whether to sell three properties in Michigan and Mississippi, and is in a fresh round of bidding, Murren said. Prospective buyers are offering more ‘now that we’re not as forced a seller,’ he said. ‘Bid valuations are rising.’

"MGM Mirage, based in Las Vegas, hired investment bank Morgan Stanley to evaluate bids for its MGM Grand Detroit, the Beau Rivage in Biloxi and the Gold Strike in Tunica.

"Business in Las Vegas has ‘clearly bottomed out,’ Murren said…"

Utah Prohibiting Mobile Online Gambling – Online Casino News

Posted by admin

In America, the Utah Transit Authority has recently adopted an ordinance that will fine passengers who visit gambling and gaming sites using its free wireless Internet service.

The ordinance was approved late last month with the Authority revealing that the fine for a first violation would be $300 while subsequent penalties could be as high as $500.

Passengers on FrontRunner commuter trains and express buses must be at least 18 years of age to use the Authority’s free Internet service. In addition, users must agree to a set of term and conditions, which include accepting a content filter that restricts access to sites deemed offensive.

Gerry Carpenter, a spokesperson for the Authority, stated that enforcement duties would be handled by a transit police officer. He revealed that those breaking the terms and conditions would be issued with a citation but passengers may appeal.

Online Casino Checks Bouncing At World Series Of Poker

Posted by admin

WSOP
Leading up to the World Series of Poker, many online casinos were running promotional tournaments in which players could win seats at the WSOP. Some of the players who won these seats have had problems entering the tournaments.

The US government seized bank accounts last week that were being used to pay out player winnings from online poker sites. The seizure was over $30 million in players winnings, and some of that money was to be used for entry fees at the WSOP.

That is why some of these players have been turned away. Checks that were given to pay for the event seats, have bounced. It has caused a major irritation among online poker sites.

“These sites put a lot of time and resources into running these free tournaments that lead to WSOP buy-ins,” said observer Kelly Briscol, “being that the seizure happened during the WSOP, the sites do not have the time to come up with alternative ways to buy these winning players into the tournaments.”

There is a rage brewing among online poker players in the US. They do not feel like they are breaking any laws, yet they are being blocked from playing online. That is something they are hoping Representative Barney Frank’s new legislation will correct.

Frank has introduced a Bill that would legalize and begin the regulation process of online gambling in the US. Although it is in the works, the legislation will not help any of the online winners that were supposed to participate in this years WSOP.

“It is great that I will not have to worry about this in the future,” said Frankie S., who won one of the tournament entries online, “but that does not help me right now.”

International: Ukraine Government split over new gambling ban

Posted by admin

Last month a casino fire that resulted in 10 casualties drew new criticism in the Ukraine. In an emotional response to the incident, the Ukraine parliament pushed through a blanket ban on all gambling establishments in the country. Just last Friday Ukrainian President Yushchenko exercised his veto and rejected the bill, a move that allowed area betting halls, casinos, and slots vendors to reopen their doors this Monday.

Yushchenko’s plan was to allow limited operations while new legislation for better governance of the country’s gambling industry is being developed. The president cited the significant value of the industry in light of the current world recession as the basis for his veto.

Tuesday the Ukrainian debate over the legality of gambling took another twist when their legislature announced its intention to override Yushchenko’s veto and revive the ban. Prime Minister Tymoshenko has threatened that to bypass Yushchenko if need be and go straight to parliament to ensure that the ban is upheld. For their part, owners and operators in Ukraine’s gambling industry have voiced their concerns over the new bill and have vowed to strike should it be reinstated.
